ISTIGFAAR: WHY DO WE NEED TO SEEK ALLAH'S FORGIVENESS?

The beauty in the nature of the soul(inner self) is that it recognizes when it is wrong! We may sometimes deny, trying to cover it or say “it’s not that bad” but we all know when we have crossed the boundaries!

Seeking Allah’s forgiveness is highly recommended in the Quran and sunnah. We are encouraged to do that in so many ways, like how it is said in the Quran surah Nuh , it will cause Allah to literally send down the sky, and this is used in the context of someone struggling with their finances. Very motivating, but why do we need to seek Allah’s forgiveness?

فَقُلۡتُ ٱسۡتَغۡفِرُواْ رَبَّكُمۡ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ غَفَّارٗا

(Sahih International)
And said, ‘Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver.

-Surah Nuh, Ayah 10

يُرۡسِلِ ٱلسَّمَآءَ عَلَيۡكُم مِّدۡرَارٗا

(Sahih International)
He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers

-Surah Nuh, Ayah 11

(Sahih International)
And give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers.

-Surah Nuh, Ayah 12

Because we offended, ruined, caused harm to our own selves!

We often think when we do wrong we wronged Allah, you know if you forgot to do the dishes, or take out the trash you probably offended mom, but when it comes to Allah we can do no harm to Him whatsoever! So in reality we caused our selves harm and we are seeking His forgiveness to wipe it away, protect us from the harm we have caused.

And Allah says in the quran

أَوۡ يُوبِقۡهُنَّ بِمَا كَسَبُواْ وَيَعۡفُ عَن كَثِيرٖ

(Sahih International)
Or He could destroy them for what they earned; but He pardons much.-Surah Ash-Shura, Ayah 34

Is it not by the mercy, love and care of Allah that we have the opportunity to seek His forgiveness?

Rabbig firli wa tub alayya innaka antal gafurur rahim
